Dissertation Research Preparation

Background for Beginning Research

  1. In-depth interview

This method will be one of my chosen data collection methods.  As a Licensed Professional Counselor, this is part of the way in which I do my most intense work with patients. Getting to know an individual in a private interview situation gives good details for learning about who they are and what makes them tick. After the trust is built between the participant and the researcher, the in-depth interview will answer most questions.  Interviews draw a vivid picture of the individual where they are the expert in their own story (Milena,  Dainora,  & Alin, (2008).  A research individual must ask open-ended questions to flesh out good answers. Making sure to ask the participants  “is there more?”  Will let the participants tell you as much as they would like you to know.

In-depth Interviews usually work better as a second type of data collection.  In other words, something needs to be used initially to sort out the sample.  In my case, I will be using a questionnaire that is empirically reliable, the Zarit Burden Interview.

In the research from Milena, Dainora, & Alin ( 2008)  in-depth interviews were accomplished in links between business and educational environments.  This study was a bit confusing due to the fact of translation between languages.  A literature review was used in the project, however.  In-depth interviews work best with qualitative research studies.

  1. Web-Based Surveys

Baatard, (2012) believes that the Internet provides a wonderful opportunity for web surveys in the future. Surveys, in general, have been difficult as individuals no longer have as many landlines and do not answer their telephones immediately (use screening devices for incoming calls) making it difficult for survey completion in this manner.  Also, mail-based communication is old-fashioned and not reliable. These survey methods are costly to administer. Mail surveys have established a reputation for having a low response rate.

An email program called SurveyMonkey enables a researcher to prepare surveys for all types of research and we have learned how to do this in research classes last year. One of the issues with web surveys is that of privacy and ethics.  Protecting the personal information and identity of all participants is of paramount importance. Encrypted emails can be used, however. they are cumbersome and difficult for many individuals to master. Web-based surveys could be used with qualitative or quantitative studies.

What Method of Talk Therapy is Best for Me?

12 Apr

Announcement: The stigma has vanished for individuals who want to ‘talk out their issues.’

Being able to talk to someone who is clinically trained can help us lift a mood and see things more clearly. We can also work on some bothersome behaviors.

For those who live near their favorite therapist/counselor, a face-to-face psychotherapy practice is best. But for many reasons, people often choose other methods of delivery for therapy. Those methods are email sessions, telephone sessions, video conferencing on some favorite methods (Skype, for example), and private chatroom sessions. Couples and family sessions can also be accomplished on most of these methods.

Today, I’d like to talk about Email Counseling Sessions with your favorite therapist.

Email sessions are easy for some because all that is necessary is to write out the issue. As a therapist, I believe it is wise to keep a daily journal. This practice helps us organize our thoughts and express and release emotions when not in our session. From that point, the therapist will respond.

We’ll talk more about other delivery methods in some of the next blog posts.

For those interested in talk therapy, please email me for details. KathiCounselor@aol.com or KathiCounselor@gmail.com. I can be found through some major psychotherapy and counseling sites if you wish to Google Kathleen R. Madison, LPC.

Today you might wish to participate in some homework I’ve challenged my face-to-face clients:

Make a Gratitude List and add two items to it daily. Write all the things you are grateful for today. Research has shown that the happiest people are those who freely express gratitude.

Namaste.

Up to Your Ears in Alligators?

Up to Your Ears in Alligators?

Sometimes it Feels Like This, Doesn’t It?
When I talk with individuals about the stress and confusion, frustration and anxiety they are experiencing in their daily lives, we review an important checklist: Number One Item: Are you too involved in being concerned about the BEHAVIOR of another individual? If so, remember that “We are only responsible for OUR OWN BEHAVIORS.” Minding others’ business is a huge stressor in our lives! How can we possibly know what is best for others? We only know what is best for US.
Just for Today, let’s shoo those ‘Alligators’ away and know that they don’t have to exist when we are only concerned about our own actions, business, and behaviors!
Have a peaceful and stress-free day!

Finding Your Peaceful Place

10 Mar
You Can Go Here

A Special Peaceful Place

Stress and Anxiety change everything (if we let it into our lives)!

Often I encourage going to a special “peaceful place in your brain.” Eastern teachings help us achieve success in this journey. Use every resource available to find answers locked inside while discovering how to manifest happiness and contentment.

Here’s a photo I want to share taken at Bathesheba Beach in Barbados.  Do you see the beauty of nature? Can you hear the ocean and the wind? Do you smell the salt air? Use all of your inner senses to help you find your peaceful life.

You are living in the present and that is the best place to begin your travels!

Peace be with you, my friend.
